Middle school students are characterized by rapid physical growth, curiosity about their world, and an emerging self-identity. Through a comprehensive developmental school counseling program, the counselor works as a team member with school staff, parents, and the community to create a caring, supportive school atmosphere whereby young adolescents can achieve academic success. The counselor also develops authentic Advisory lessons for middle school based on students’ academic, social and developmental needs.
The NCPA Middle School counseling program is essential for students to achieve optimal personal growth, acquire positive social skills and values, set appropriate academic/career goals, and realize their full potential to become productive, contributing members of the world community. The program aims to develop appropriate communication skills for young people to apply in various settings, such as with friends, classmates, adults, and with parents. We strive to model the value of respect as well as the understanding that all people, with their differences, should be validated.
The Middle School counselor supports students as they transition into middle school and graduate from middle school to high school; the counselor also helps students and families navigate admissions processes as needed for different academic and extracurricular programs.
Middle School Advisory Program
The Advisory program helps to create a rigorous and supportive learning environment through which each student can develop his or her individual potential. As members of their close-knit Advisory group, students are active participants in their social, emotional, and academic development.
The Middle School Advisory curriculum consists of activities and topics aligned to support student development in academic, personal/social, and career preparation. Components of the Middle School advisory program include developing successful academic and social skills, setting relevant goals, reflecting on learning, building academic portfolios, and participating in team-building activities. The primary focus of the program is to build community feeling among students, encourage a sense of belonging and respect, as well as promote inclusion and decrease anonymity during the transition into school life at NCPA. Middle School teachers take on roles as house advisors; through this role, they provide academic and personal/social advisement and support. Between the house advisors and Middle School counselor, there is open, reciprocal communication to support student success.
